A Civil Guard officer's helmet dating: mid-19th Century provenance: Papal States Skull of boiled leather, brass front emblem with remains of gilding, depicting a shell-guard with the mark " PIO IX" surmounted by a Staff officer's eight-pointed silver star, on top of everything the papal tiara. Tip complete with white horsehair; leather chin-straps lined with velvet (defects) and armoured with brass scales, on the left the metallic cockade.
