Large Cents 1798 S-178 R5+ Style II Hair, Small 8, Reverse of

Large Cents
1798 S-178 R5+ Style II Hair, Small 8, Reverse of 1796, Fine Detail, Environmental Damage, PCGS. Nicely detailed where the designs are properly struck up, but the planchet is covered with fine granularity under a glossy dark olive brown patina. The highpoints are a lighter shade of chocolate brown, and the contrast accents the devices and enhances the eye appeal. No verdigris. There are several faint hairlines on the reverse, the strongest one slanting across the top of the wreath. Extremely rare LDS, Breen state IV late, with the obverse and reverse die cracks very strong. The date is bold and the legends are clear including the single terminal leaf feature at the top of the wreath. Called VG8 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says VG10 net VG7 and CC#7, his photo #24388. This cataloger's EAC grade is net VG7. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 36008.97/47249976.
